Is Hugging Face Safe?

Security analysis for apps built with Hugging Face. AI platform with model hub, inference API, and Spaces for hosting ML applications.

Is Hugging Face safe? The short answer

Hugging Face is the reference platform for sharing models, datasets and AI demos, and using it is safe in itself. Like any open platform, though, it hosts content published by anyone, and it gives you powerful credentials. Both deserve care.

There are two separate questions. For your app: are your access tokens and Space secrets kept out of public code, and are your inference endpoints protected against abuse? For the models you load: are you running code you have not reviewed? Model files in some formats can execute code when loaded, and some models ask you to enable custom code from their repository. Most risks in AI-built apps come from tokens in the frontend and from loading unvetted models with full permissions.

Hugging Face misconfigurations we see in AI-built apps

Access tokens in the frontend

A user access token (starting with hf_) placed in client code lets anyone call APIs as you, consume your inference credits and, with a write token, modify your repositories. Call Hugging Face from your server, and use fine-grained or read-only tokens scoped to what the app needs.

Secrets stored as Space variables

Spaces have variables and secrets. Variables are meant for non-sensitive configuration and can be visible to others on a public Space; API keys must be stored as secrets. Hardcoding a key in app.py of a public Space publishes it with the code.

trust_remote_code=True on unknown models

This option lets a model repository run its own Python code on your machine or server. Only enable it for repositories you have reviewed, and pin a specific revision so the code cannot change under you.

Loading pickle-based weights from untrusted sources

Pickle-based formats can execute code on load. Prefer safetensors weights, and treat other formats from unknown authors with the same caution as any downloaded executable.

Public Spaces calling paid APIs

A public Space, especially a Gradio app, can usually be called programmatically, not only through its web interface. If it uses your API keys behind the scenes, anyone can consume them. Add authentication or limits, or make the Space private.

Hugging Face security checklist

Load a model with a pinned revision and safetensors weights (transformers):
from transformers import AutoModel

model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
    "org/model-name",
    revision="<commit-sha>", # pin the exact version you reviewed
    use_safetensors=True,       # refuse pickle-based weights
    # trust_remote_code stays False unless you reviewed the repo's code
)

Common Security Issues in Hugging Face Apps

Exposed API Keys

AI coding tools often embed API keys directly in frontend JavaScript. If you're using Hugging Face, check that secret keys aren't in your client-side bundle.

Missing Security Headers

Headers like Content-Security-Policy, Strict-Transport-Security, and X-Frame-Options protect against XSS, clickjacking, and downgrade attacks.

Vulnerable Dependencies

Outdated npm packages with known CVEs are common in AI-generated code. Regular audits catch these before attackers do.

Authentication Weaknesses

Open registration endpoints, missing rate limiting, and exposed auth tokens are frequent issues in vibe-coded apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hugging Face safe to use?

Hugging Face itself is a reputable platform, but apps built with Hugging Face often have security misconfigurations — exposed API keys, missing security headers, and vulnerable dependencies. ScanVibe scans your app to find these issues.

What security issues do Hugging Face apps commonly have?

The most common issues we find in Hugging Face apps are: exposed API keys in frontend JavaScript, missing security headers (CSP, HSTS), outdated dependencies with known vulnerabilities, and misconfigured authentication endpoints.

How do I check if my Hugging Face app is secure?

Enter your app's URL in ScanVibe's scanner. We'll check for exposed secrets, security headers, vulnerable libraries, exposed files, and platform-specific misconfigurations — all in about 30 seconds.

Does ScanVibe scan Hugging Face specifically?

Yes. ScanVibe detects Hugging Face in your stack and runs platform-specific security checks in addition to our standard 8-category analysis.

Is it safe to download models from Hugging Face?

Generally yes, with precautions: prefer models from known publishers, use safetensors weights rather than pickle-based files, keep trust_remote_code disabled unless you have reviewed the repository, and pin a specific revision. Hugging Face scans uploaded files, but you remain responsible for the code you run.

Can I use my Hugging Face token in a frontend app?

No. A token in client code is readable by every visitor, who can then use your quota and, with write permissions, change your repositories. Call Hugging Face from a server route with a fine-grained token, and return only the results to the browser.
